The overall aim of the English Colleges FA International Programme is to develop students who are combining full-time studies in further education colleges with playing high level football, whilst offering talented college staff high quality professional development opportunities. The Board of the English Colleges FA unanimoulsy agreed to suspend the operation of the national team programme, as an interim measure, for the 2014/15 season. We will be working closely with our partners and members over the next few months, with an announcement  about future plans made by June 2015.

Aims & Objectives of Programme

  1. An aspirational representative football programme that allows every player to reach his/her potential, raises standards, enriches the sport, and which attracts and retains players, coaches, referees and administrators.
  2. To develop an effective system to allow players in full-time further education to represent their country.
  3. To identify players within college football with outstanding ability and place them in an environment designed to produce football and educational excellence, raising their aspirations to progress further with their studies and football.
  4. To develop an effective system to identify coaches and workforce with high potential working within the FE sector and develop, train and mentor them.

The philosophy of the programme is a combination of the high performance requirements expected of an England team integrated with education values. This means creating an environment which applies learning concepts, long-term player development principles and strives for best practice in the development of elite performance (appropriate to the 16-19 age group). The infrastructure and delivery mechanisms in place to support this include:

  1. Access to high quality facilities
  2. Working with highly qualified and skilled coaches and expert staff within this age group
  3. A Multi-disciplinary support programme embracing sports science disciplines
  4. A balanced and progressive training programme based around concepts from sport specific long term player development models
  5. Appropriate competitive fixtures against high quality national and international teams
  6. Utilising technology, innovation and educational concepts to inform programming
  7. A culture of improvement and personal development
